SOCIAL MEDIA

Hola Lexicans!!! I can't believe it's already the 8th of December... AHH YAY! Today I'm doing a sort of rant/opinion post, on quite a controversial topic between parents and their kids, and that is...... social media for tweens - Instagram, Snapchat, WhatsApp, etc. etc.

My parents are rather flexible when it comes to social media for me! I have a Twitter account (whatlexieloves), a Facebook page, Pinterest account and more for my blog, as well as a personal Instagram page, which I know most parents would straight away to say no to.

Now, because my parents are so understanding when it comes down to social media, when Snapchat became (and still is) the new 'big thing' for my friends, I was obviously going to ask them if I could set up a Snapchat account. I was expecting to ask them, leave them to chat about it for a few hours, and then get one the next day. Let's just say it didn't quite go like I'd planned.

MUM: It's the perfect platform for bullying.
ME: How??
MUM: Pictures that disappear in 10 seconds or less.. How do you think that's not perfection for bullies?
ME: Ugh, no EVERYONE has it.
MUM: JE doesn't, nor does TP, nor does DB etc.
ME: Mum I can list loads of people who have it (*recites a long list*)
MUM: That's hardly everyone.

And the argument continued, and I still don't have Snapchat, and I still really want it. My argument is that it's now one of the most popular ways for my generation to communicate, and in the unlikely case I was being bullied, I can actually screenshot the picture, although it does send a message to the sender. I could have a private account and honestly only let people I know follow me. Now when my friends go to chat to their's instead of using text or Instagram, they use Snapchat and I can predict soon almost everyone will have it, and I want to be ahead of the game.

Mum, I do respect your very valid points but this is something I really want, it's one of the most prime ways to communicate these days, and I would be very careful.

xxx What are your opinions on this, and what are your parents?

  1. Lexie maybe you should wait a year or something for snapchat, I've had it, and it takes up a lot of your time and gives you pressure to be always having to share everything single lil snap of your life. However, I KNOW HOW YOU FEEL.

  2. Snapchat is definitely the best social media out there! As for the rest of it, it's a little mind poisoning but maybe the benefits outweigh the unreasonable angst that goes with it?

  3. Oh, I didn't know you were on Twitter. I'm gonna give you a follow right now :)
I don't really have an opinion on Snapchat. I don't have Snapchat and I don't feel like I'm missing out on anything. If I wanted to have a Snapchat account, I would just make one, but I'm 19 so my parents don't have much say in the matter anymore (neither do they know what Snapchat is). To be honest, I don't think waiting would help. By the time you're allowed to set up an account, there's probably already a new big thing :P

  4. I had to go through something similar - my parents have always been flexible, but it recently took a bit of convincing when I asked for an Instagram account. I eventually worked it out with my parents, and we set some rules (I couldn't post more than once a day, I had to set it to private, I couldn't follow anyone suspicious or inappropriate) and I now have a personal account. I had a Snapchat account, but literally none of my friends were on it, so the only person I sent anything to was my sister, and I eventually deleted the app. Fingers crossed you can work it out :) xx

  5. I am sure your parents will let you get it soon my mum doesn't mind what I have but she does sometimes have a look at who I have on my account.
