Six The Musical - review of the empowering, feel-good show which everyone needs to see

Hi! Since July I have been obsessed with the Six the Musical soundtrack and a couple of months ago I finally got to go and see it at the Arts Theatre with my mum and sister. It's now 100% my favourite musical ever, and I can't wait to go and see it again after corona has gone. I thought I'd do a little review of Six, for those of you who haven't seen it.

SIX the musical is a fairly new show (it premiered in 2017), and now it's on in the West End, Broadway, Australia and has a UK tour. (Obviously it's not actually running right now due to corona, but it will be when that's all over!) It's about the six wives of Henry VIII, but from their perspectives. As I'm sure you'll all agree, in school we only really learn about Henry and the rhyme 'divorced, beheaded, died, divorced, beheaded, survived' and we don't actually go in detail about the wives' stories and how tragic they truly are. SIX takes the wives and tells their stories through the format of a modern, up-beat pop concert.

The music in this show is all so catchy and fun, and I have genuinely had the soundtrack on repeat since July 2019 (I'm pretty sure Get Down was my most played song of 2019, despite the fact I only discovered it halfway through the year). Even if you aren't able to watch the show, I genuinely recommend putting the soundtrack on (my personal recommendations are Get Down, No Way and All You Wanna Do, but it's all absolutely amazing). You may have heard snippets of a couple of the songs on TikTok by the way, as some lines have gone TikTok viral (like 'I think we can all agree I'm a 10 amongst these 3s').

The show itself is amazing! It's only 75 minutes which I love because I have an awful attention span and can't sit still for much longer than that. It has a great meaning behind it; it's all about girl power and coming together to re-define how people see the wives. Not only that, but it's super funny and made me full-on laugh out loud so much. I love that it was told with a modern twist as for me that made it more engaging. Finally, the cast are all super lovely, unproblematic and talented; they're a very diverse group of women, which I think is so important as it empowers girls of all different ethnicities, sizes and sexualities.
My sister and I!

I very highly recommend this show whether you're a history buff or not - the music is amazing and you will definitely leave the theatre feeling empowered. One of the very first things I'm doing after quarantine is over (obviously other than seeing my grandparents and friends!!) is booking tickets to see it again at least once (I really want to see it more than that, but I'm not sure my bank account will allow me!). Also if all this wasn't impressive enough, Lucy Moss the co-writer of the show is officially the youngest female director on a Broadway show - how amazing is that?!

My friend is a super talented singer, dancer and actress and she's definitely going to audition for Anne Boleyn when she's old enough (I really wish I could be one of the queens myself but I cannot dance or sing to save my life!!).

Have you heard of SIX? Have you seen it? You can get your tickets for the West End show here, the UK tour here, Broadway here and Australia here. Hope you liked this little review and you're all staying safe and healthy. Remember to stay home!

    1. Thanks Emily!! I know right, the songs are so catchy - I've had them stuck in my head for weeks (and I'm not even mad about it hehe). I definitely recommend booking tickets to see it after quarantine, if you're able to.
